Nursing, a profession that recalls the name of Florence Nightingale is indeed one of the noblest professions in the world. It is the art of caring for sick people with the science of health care. It is a vital component of any form of medical care. The largest groups of workers in the health sector are those in the nursing occupations. In a hospital from the general ward to the operating theater, nursing forms an integral part.
The general aim of the General Nursing & Midwifery (GNM) programme is to prepare young adults for direct bedside nursing care. Therefore, the training programme of 2 Years and mainly focuses on developing practical, hands on skill in the nursing process. The scope of registered nurses after passing GNM Programme for employment is, in hospitals, clinics, public health areas, industry, defence etc.
Career Pathway
The demand for qualified and skilled nurses never diminishes but continues to grow with the expansion of health care facilities. Apart from jobs in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, orphanages, old age homes, there is also scope for private practice. With the expansion of educational and training institutions in nursing, the demand for teachers is also increasing. Nurses spend much of their time on their feet, either walking or standing. Nursing is also an emotionally demanding job, involving long and strenuous working hours. They are often exposed to health hazards. In many organizations the salary levels are very low. For those who feel that caring for the sick and disabled is the motto in life, they will find the profession satisfactory and more often than not financially rewarding as well.
